Spotlight on the Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa

Dirk Coetzer, managing director of ICON Investments, has worked in the financial sector for nearly two decades. A citizen of South Africa, Dirk Coetzer also strives to show support for humanitarian causes as a registered organ donor.

Recognizing that less than .2 percent of the South African population was registered as organ donors (compared to 37 percent in the U.S. and 24 percent in Australia), the Organ Donor Foundation was founded in 1988 with a simple purpose: to increase public awareness about organ and tissue donation programs and promote greater involvement. With the support of thousands of registrants and several corporate sponsors, the ODF has been able to raise awareness about approximately 4,300 South African adults and children awaiting critical transplants. Just one registrant can save up to seven lives, and proceeds go directly into fund programs such as the Emergency Flight Fund, which finances chartered flights for tissue retrieval when no other alternatives are available.

The ODF invites others to help it succeed in signing on 50,000 donors in 2014 by registering online at www.odf.org.za.
